Names can be securely up to 32 characters in length. Names may incorporate alphanumeric characters, non-accentuation characters, and a period (.).

  • You can't have a space in a variable name.

  • Try not to end a variable name with a period.

  • Try not to end a variable name with a highlight.

  • You can utilize periods and highlights inside a variable name.

  • You can utilize upper and lower case, and a blend thereof, inside a variable name.

  • You can't utilize SPSS saved catchphrases as a variable name (i.e., you can't utilize ALL, AND, BY, EQ, GE, GT, LE, LT, NE, NOT, OR, TO or WITH).
